Synopsis Maxwell Formsby, an evangelical minister, rejects his college-aged son Billy, following the discovery that Billy is gay. The story begins with the family together in a small Texas town at Christmastime. All are at home for the holidays, all except Billy. The sadness of loss grips the family; but so does anger, as the younger sons— Justin and Tim— take Billy’s side against their father. Sarah, the wife and mother, struggles to hold the family together. Maxwell remains steadfast in his belief that God requires his rejection of Billy. But his dilemma is agonizing, for Billy is Maxwell’s favorite son. Drawing a parallel between the ancient story of Abraham and Isaac, Kierkegaard’s Gambit portrays a man torn between obedience to his God and the love of his son. This is a story of a family at war with itself— a story of love and hate and deliverance.
About this Playwright
 LON ROGERS resides in
Dallas, Texas. His published credits include a novel, The Between Season,
and stage plays, Kierkegaard's Gambit, Evening Star Rising, Second Son,
and Losing Daniel, in addition to articles published in the
medical literature. The play Captive Minds was a winner of the 2012
Denton Community Theatre Playwriting Festival. Losing Daniel was
selected for a staged reading in the Winter Reading Contest by the Texas
Dramatists 2008 and won Honorable Mention in the Stage West Playwriting
Competition, Fort Worth, Texas 2008. As a teacher of English as a second
language, Lon Rogers has written 60 reading lessons, as stories with
worksheets, for ESL students. The lessons are combined into two separate PDF
files of thirty lessons each. All are offered—free of charge—to all ESL
